History

Second Calvary Baptist Church was established on November 29, 1914. The church was formed from members of First Calvary Baptist Church in the Dovestown community in Charlotte, North Carolina. These members wanted to worship God at a church closer to their Greenville community. Under the leadership of Rev. McDaniel, they began worshipping at a small building on Johnson Street.

After eleven years of growth and prosperity, the congregation marched from Johnson Street to a new white frame structure on Forest Street (later changed to Fontana Street). This relocation sparked a re-organization for a more effective ministry of service to God and to the surrounding community. After years of commitment and service, the members were able to burn the mortgage in 1945.

In October of 1947, Rev. J. M. Kennedy was called as pastor. Under his pastorate, there were many outstanding accomplishments. There was significant church growth to over 500 members, adult and youth groups were formed, the physical structure was renovated to include classrooms, sanctuary annex, kitchen, and dining area. Second Calvary was the first black church to establish an outreach mission in the Charlotte area, with a daycare center.

In 1974, Urban Renewal required the church building to be relocated to its present location on Nelson Avenue. In 1976 Rev. Kennedy retired. Under Rev. Lemar Foster, Second Calvary saw continued growth in membership and in spirituality. A radio ministry and an athletic ministry were formed.

With God’s help, Second Calvary continued to thrive under the leadership of three subsequent pastors. Other ministries that were implemented include: New Members Classes, Step Team, Liturgical Dance Group, Seniors Ministry, and Archives Ministry.

The Lord sent Ralph M. McCormick to pastor Second Calvary in March of 2003. The church is experiencing a spiritual revival with his powerful preaching and teaching of God’s word. Under Pastor McCormick’s leadership over 650 new members have joined our church.

A Business Administrator was added to the church staff, and Adult and Youth Bible Studies are flourishing on Wednesday nights. Effective leadership training and a meaningful logo along with a mission statement have been implemented and embraced by our congregation.

A new sound system and new sanctuary lights have been installed; along with many renovations to the administrative wing. New ministries include: Evangelism, Mime, Drama, Events, Adorning, Liturgical Dance, Bereavement, and Intercessory Prayer amongst others. Other ministries are being revitalized with purpose and focus.

We thank God as He moves Second Calvary into the future as a body of believers who are “Advancing the Kingdom of God through Salvation, Liberation, and Restoration with Excellence.”
